Abstract

The Calamba Rice Growers‟ Multi-purpose Cooperative (CRGMPC) has been in existence for more than seven years now but it‟s members have yet to take full advantage of the goods and services they offer. This study aims to determine whether the cooperative is meeting its main objective of improving the quality of life of its members and to recommend ways of improving the existing policies if needed. The study was conducted by collecting information from 2 sets of respondents: 32 members were identified from CRGMPC‟s roster and 32 non-members were randomly-drawn from the list of rice farmers provided by the local government. Based on the Likert scaling, the members are generally satisfied with the services they availed. These services include rice farm management, machinery services, handling and transporting services, credit services, irrigation, palay marketing, and consumer services. The t-test of means for parameters gross returns, total cost and net farm income showed that there was no significant difference between members and non-members though there may seem to have based on the comparison of these three parameters on nominal terms. The issues that need to be addressed are: (1) low farm gate price dictated by palay traders; (2) inadequate irrigation facilities in the area; (3) high price of agricultural supplies used in palay production including fertilizers and pesticides; (4) high cost of agricultural machineries; and (5) high interest rates for loans offered by palay traders. To improve member satisfaction, the cooperative may opt to: (1) adopt a more competitive pricing scheme for the goods and services they offer; (2) increase the farm gate buying price of palay; and (3) re-orient the farmer-members about the policies and procedures and keep them informed when new services becomes available.
