Abstract

The performance of an irrigation system can be evaluated in terms of the adequacy, timeliness, and equity in supplying water. Performance evaluation of irrigation systems is important not only in the daily operational and rehabilitation activities but also in strategic planning. This study aimed to compare the performance of Divisions IV and V in the Upper Pampanga River Integrated Irrigation System (UPRIIS) in Nueva Ecija. The water use and agricultural productivity performance indicators such as relative water supply (RWS), irrigated area performance (F), irrigation water quota (M), yield per unit area (Y), and yield per unit quantity of water (Yw) were used to compare these two divisions. Results showed that the supply of water in both divisions is higher than crop demands. The crop yield in both divisions was also found to be higher than the average yield in the region. Division IV exhibited higher RWS and F but lower M, Y, and Yw compared to Division V. These indicated that the slight reduction in water supply has no negative effect on yield as long as the supply of water meets the crop demand. The higher yield and lower RWS in Division V compared to Division IV can be an indication that Division V performed better than Division IV in terms of yield. The Division V, however, irrigated lesser area compared to Division IV. The indicators to determine the variability and timeliness of flows was recommended to better compare the two divisions.
