Abstract
A preliminary study on the development of particle board using rice straw conducted by the trainee at PHiLMech located at the Science City of Muñoz, Nueva Ecija. PHiLMech was chosen as the site for the study because it's considered as a dedicated agency in postharvest research, agricultural mechanization, development, and extension services. The rice straw chosen as a substitute for wood in the production of particle board to lessen the pollution from burning rice straw and to minimize the usage of natural resources that can lead to deforestation. For the convenience of the trainee in performing the study, the process involved in manufacturing particle board that were made suited in the laboratory scale-set-up. The aim of the study was to determine if a particle board can be classified as good a substitute for wood. The primary factor affecting particle board's properties was the moisture content. Moisture content must be monitored throughout the process to increase the probability of creating a passable board. A moisture content of below 8% was constantly being monitored by the trainee and utilized re-sealable plastic bags to avoid re-absorption of moisture. The trainee concluded that a particle board can be develop using rice straw using cassava starch as binder and recommends further study of the topic.
