Abstract
Actual operations and processes inside a raw sugar factory and refinery were observed in the field practice in CADPI Milling Company, Inc. Several unit operations are involved in raw and refined sugar manufacture. The first step in raw sugar production is the extraction of juice from the sugarcane in the milling tandems. Impurities in the mixed is removed by means of clarification. The impurities or the mud undergoes filtration for recovery of crystallizable sugar while the clarified juice undergoes evaporation to remove the water and produce syrup. The syrup is further concentrated into a massecuite in pan boiling. Raw sugar is separated from the molasses through centrifugation processes. The raw sugar undergoes refining process to remove the colorants and increase purity. The process starts with remelting and affination. The next process is carbonation wherein the carbon dioxide is introduced to the liqour to further remove the impurities such as colorants and non-sugars. It proceeds to decolorization using IER columns. It then undergoes evaporation, white pan boiling, centrifugation and packaging. Two grades of raw sugar is produced, the standard and premium grade. A special topic which aimed to design flash tank for boiler blowdown heat recovery was done.
