Abstract
An experiment was done to simulate and modify the design of an existing naturally ventilated holding pen for dairy cattle. The existing design was located at Hacienda Macalauan, Calauan, Laguna. It was modeled in PHOENICS and its performance on a hot and almost windless condition was determined. To improve the performance of the existing design, modifications were introduced. These were changing the height and inclination of the roof. Heights at 2.0, 3.0, 2.75 and 2.25 meters; while roof inclinations at 10.0°, 20.0°, 15.0° and 12.5° were tested with PHOENICS. The vertical and horizontal profile of their temperature and velocity distribution was observed in the occupancy level of animals. The results were compared with that of the existing design. Results showed the existing holding pen design was able to provide an acceptable environment for dairy cattle despite setting extremely hot and windless initial conditions. The temperature inside the building was set to 35°C. An incoming air with temperature of 27°C and velocity of 0.2m/s was introduced. The setup was simulated in a one hour timeframe. It was known that the average internal air temperature of the existing design was almost the same compared to the inlet air temperature. It registered a value of 28.75°C. Also, an outward movement of air from the holding pen was observed in its velocity profile. Setting the roof at height 2.25 meters and inclination at 15° showed the best internal environment compared to other cases. The average horizontal temperatures observed were 28.90°C and 28.61°C respectively. These settings were able to provide temperatures at points and average temperatures at planes in the occupancy zones even lower from the existing design while maintaining desirable outward movement of air. Changing the height and inclination of the roof of a building has a great effect on its natural ventilation. These factors have direct effect in the amount of air that will be permitted and even in the building. Also by modifying these things, the ratio of inlet and outlet area in a shed holding pen will also change. The ratio of inlet and outlet area significantly affects the volume of air induced inside a naturally ventilated building.
