Abstract
In situ alkaline transesterification is an alternative method of biodiesel production that combines extraction of oil and transesterification of it into fatty acid methyl ester. Jatropha curcas meal was obtained after the seeds were mechanically extracted of oil. The meal was found to still contain 10.22% oil. It has 0.965%FFA and 9.90% moisture content. Effects of varying volume of methanol sodium hydroxide concentration, and reaction time were tested on the samples obtained. Series of combinations at various levels of room temperature and at high temperature were generated using Response Surface Method. This statistical tool was also used in analyzing the response of %FAME and %FFA. At higher temperature, alkali concentration has a more negative effect than volume of methanol resulting to high contamination of FFA.For both temperatures, high volume of ethanol with low alkali concentration yields the highest %FAME. Reaction conducted at high temperature proceeded better than those at room temperature, it is 91.93%. However, utilization of post-extracted Jatropha curcas meal is not viable feedstock because the quality of the biodiesel produced did not meet the Philippine National Standard set for biodiesel.
