Abstract

Soil characterization was done on the areas irrigated by the Balanac River Irrigation System (BRIS). Two replicates per site were collected for determination of soil texture at depths 15cm, 30cn and 45cm. Two replicates per site were also collected for determination of bulk density, particle density and porosity at 15 cm depth and one sample per site for hydraulic conductivity. Thiessen polygons were used to delineate the area for soil texture while inverse distance weighting (IDW) interpolation was used to delineate the service for bulk density, particle density, porosity and hydraulic conductivity using Geographic Information System (GIS). The obtained values for bulk density in the service area ranged from 0.80 to 1.43 g/cm, particle density from 2.31 to 2.70 g/cm, porosity from 40.72 to 69.70%, and hydraulic conductivity from 2.87 x 10-2 mm/hr to2.71 x 10-1 mm/hr. Furthermore, clay loam texture was found to be the dominant soil texture at 0-15 cm and 30-45 cm depth. Seven out of nine sites were different from the expected soil type given in the area by BSWM. Soil erosion and map delineation were inferred as factors of variation in the results. The obtained values for bulk density, particle density porosity and hydraulic conductivity satisfied the conditions for holding adequate amount of water and beneficial for plant root growth. Hence, planting rice in the area was very acceptable and if another low-land crop other than paddy rice were planted, crop productivity in the area would be very high because of the quality of the soil.
