Abstract
The effect of acetic acid on the pervaporation of ethanol-water mixtures was determined using the Diacap Polysulfone dialysis membrane obtained from a local source. The membrane used is hydrophobic and has an effective area of 1.8 m2 . Feed concentrations of acetic acid and ethanol were varied at 1%, 3% and 5% (v/v). Same concentrations were considered at lowered feed flowrate and permeate pressure except for ethanol, which is only 5%. Feed temperature was held constant throughout the pervaporation runs. Results indicated that increasing acetic acid concentration also increases the flux as its presence contributes to the increase in overall driving force. Also, it contributes to membrane swelling. In contrast, acetic acid tends to decrease membrane ethanol permeate concentration and consequently, the enrichment factor. By strengthening the ethanol-water interaction, most of the alcohol remained at the retentate. Running the experiment at low pressure and flowrate conditions led to similar results.
