Abstract
Maxim is a provider of electronic parts to build electronic devices and serves approximately 35,000 companies worldwide. One of Maxim’s alliances is Maxim Philippines Operating Corporation (MPOC). This was established to reduce Maxim’s dependence on subcontracted tests and assembly processes and to accommodate future manufacturing growth requirements, thus the establishment of the fabrication plants in Batangas and Cavite. MPOC, a multinational semiconductor company, relentlessly provides high-quality analogue engineering solutions that add value to customers’ microprocessor based electronics. Among the devices produced by MPOC – Batangas, the Medisense device has been a volume runner since 2007. Currently, MPOC – Batangas has established a standard time for Medisense Production from the time study held September of 2010, which results to an expected output per day of production of 106,928 units of Medisense device. Unfortunately, this production output is not met. The production line of
Medisense only produces an average of 87,276 units per day as a result from a follow- up study held November of 2010. If the Medisense production continues to have an
output of 87,276 units per day which is less than what is expected, 1,495,307 device units will not be produced for the year 2011 corresponding to profit loss of $2,766,317.95. The 1,495,307 device units approximate 4.75% of the total demand for the year 2011. In line with this, this study aims to increase the number of output by at least 4.75% to minimize profit loss associated with limited number of output of Medisense production. An Ishikawa Diagram was used to conduct CNX analysis. The identified controllable factors were lack of supervision, lack of knowledge in the importance of time in production, rules are not strictly implemented, and lack of reminders of standard operating procedures. Only one experimental factor was identified and that is the lack of standard inspection procedure. Subsequently, controls and solutions were formulated. The controls are providing appraisal in the form of salary bonus and offering of refresher course. Three alternatives were formulated for the lack of standard inspection procedure; A) Introduce an inspection procedure, B) add trained operators, and C) automate inspection. Alternative A was chosen as the best alternative which costs $ 615.45. Thus, for the year 2011, $ 2,765,702.50 can be saved.
