Abstract
The major practice was conducted at the Bayer CropScience Southeast Asia Field Research and Development Center Experimental Station at Brgy. Masiit, Calauan, Laguna from April 2012 to January 2013. The main objectives were(1) to learn the basic procedures of research work by conducting an independent experiment on herbicide efficacy and selectivity in lowland rice and to(2) learn skills in identifying key weeds infesting rice and gain actual experience in the proper application of herbicide. Efficacy and selectivity of new compounds were tested as mid-post emergence blanket spray on direct-seeded rice. Two herbicides, anAcetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibitor and a 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD) inhibitor were tested either singly, as ready-to-use (RTU) combination or tank-mixed (TM) with or without non-ionic adjuvant and performance compared with Topshot (cyhalofop+penoxsulam) and Nominee (bispyribac-sodium) designated as local and global standard, respectively. Stunting and bleaching were observed on rice as early as 3 days after application and were more intense with adjuvant. Rice was fully-recovered at 14 days. Weed control, generally, was adequate especially when adjuvant was included. TopshotTMgave excellent xv control of the weed Leptochloa chinensis but NomineeTMdid not adequately control the same weed. Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) and chili (Capsicum annuum) were relatively, more tolerant to herbicide (ALS inhibitor)- irrigation water drench than cabbage, tomato, eggplant, and watermelon. Phytotoxicity symptoms observed were stunting, yellowing, necrosis, bleaching, curling, and wilting.
