Abstract

The youth no longer see the value of agriculture these days and the best way for the younger generation to see its worth is through integrating it in the school curriculum (Knolbloch, et al., 2007). For this teaching internship, integration of agriculture in the preschool and special education curriculum was done. Agricultural-related concepts such as learning about the plant and its parts, its life stages, planting activities, the different kinds of insects as well as the major contributions of a farmer were integrated in the classroom setting. The results were positive since the children involved during the teaching internship enjoyed and appreciated the new knowledge they learned. Simple experiments helped students see the analogy of a plant’s needs to that of a human being and value the role of plants. It was also through the discussion about the farmer that the children were able to appreciate the role of this profession. This realization and understanding will help students not only appreciate but also value the role of agriculture in their everyday lives.
