Abstract

The research internship exposed the student-intern to the procedures and protocols needed in conducting a research trial. The student intern participated in one of the research projects conducted by PhilRice-Los Baños, specifically on the development of integrated nutrient management investigating the effect of organic and inorganic fertilizer management on upland rice. Activities involved the actual participation of the student intern in field trial that covered farm lay-outing, planting, weeding, fertilizer application, data collection, and data analysis. Different equipments and facilities that were used in the post-harvest processing of upland rice such as mechanical blower, thresher, and moisture meter were also observed and used by the intern. The experiment was laid out in a split plot design with modern and traditional varieties NSIC Rc9, and Inipot-ibon, respectively as main plots. Each main plot was subdivided into fertilizer treatments as subplots: 1) control, 2) inorganic (26-76-41), 3) inorganic (51-153-83), 4) commercial organic at 1 t haᯛ (26-76-41), and 5) commercial organic fertilizer at 2 t haᯛ (51-153-83). Based on the preliminary data, results showed that inorganic fertilizer treatments significantly increased the plant height of both varieties at 72 DAS. No significant differences were observed among the fertilizer treatments in terms of tiller count at 72 DAS. Organic fertilizer did not show any significant effect on either the plant height or tiller counts. However, the efficacy of organic fertilizers on increasing the yield of upland rice can only be determined after the collection and statistical analysis of the yield data.
