Abstract

The major practice was conducted at the landscape surrounding the 4-hectare man-made lake at the Lakeside Evozone, NUVALI, Sta. Rosa City from April 23, 2012 to June 1, 2012. During the major practice, various maintenance operations employed in the area such as waste management, water management, weeding, edging, nutrient management, thinning-out, mowing, balling-out, replanting, mulching, and pest and disease management were observed and performed to gain skills and evaluate the sustainability of the landscape. Based on the evaluation, the current landscape in the site is not yet considered sustainable. It is functional and environmentally sound but it lacks maintainability, cost-effectiveness and not maintained properly. Sustainability will be achieved after implementation of the proposed landscape design of the whole NUVALI and by integration of various sustainability concepts in their maintenance program. Currently, the maintenance program is not guided by sustainability concepts and requires further development. Some recommended improvements are retrofitting of onsite and offsite organic and inorganic materials, using vermi-compost and dual purpose equipments, replanting using native species, and practise integrated pest management through the use of botanical sprays. The estimated cost of maintaining the 2-hectare landscape area is Php 114,888.00 per month (Php 5.74/m2). This allotted budget is not enough to maintain a good landscape area. Supervisory skills and on-hand experience of managing a landscape area were gained after the major practice.
