Abstract

The major farm practice was conducted in the farm of Mr. Ernesto Ochoa in Barangay Timbugan, Rosario, Batangas from April to October 2012. The total area of the farm is 19 hectares of which 18 hectares were allocated for pummelo. Different production and management practices were done. This include land preparation, planting, fertilization, irrigation, propping, pest and disease control, weeding, harvesting, and postharvest handling. The planting distance between pummelo trees is 6 meters x 6 meters. For the 2012 fruiting season, 6 kilograms each of complete fertilizer and potassium nitrate were applied per tree. Water pumps were also used in irrigating the farm. Propping was done in order to support the branches with fruits. Spraying of pesticide was done to control rind borer and fruit fly. The fruits were also bagged for additional protection from the fruit fly. Weeding was done by using a motorized grass cutter and through grazing of cows. Harvesting was done from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. The harvested fruits were cured before sorting and packing. During the 2012 fruiting season, the farm generated ₱ 2,940,000 from the sale of 104,000 kg of pummelo fruits from 2500 trees or 42 kg per tree. The cost to produce pummelo on a per hectare basis is ₱ 93,067. Total net income was ₱ 1,675,216.
