Abstract
The practicum was conducted at Lopez Sugar Corporation (LSC) located at Brgy. Paraiso, Sagay City, Negros Occidental. The training was comprised of 288 working hours, from the 17ᵗʰ of April to the 25ᵗʰ of MAy 2012. Lopez Sugar Corporation is a raw sugar manufacturing factory with an installed refinery. They produce refined sugar for different customers in the food industry. The accounted piculs sugar per ton cane (PSTC) for LSC is 1.442 PSTC, the ton refined sugar produce is 23.7187 tons/hr, refining yield is 1.0526, and the total bagasse consumption of its raw house and refinery is 88.39%. Sampling methods and analysis for raw sugar and refinery at LSC was the special topic assigned. The special topic is composed of collecting, handling and preparation of process materials to be obtained from each station. Contractual samplers are employed by LSC to collect samples from selected sampling point. For this company the sampling method used is the manual method. The samples will follow the guidelines on collecting specific materials for a station on what amounts and frequencies would best fit for the process. The samples were brought to the laboratory and were prepared for the analysis. Different analyses were conducted in the Quality Assurance/Control department of LSC and these were brix, pol, %moisture, %fiber, turbidity and color reduction.Apparatuses used for the experiments were saccharimeter, brix hydrometer, turbidimeter, automatic refractometer, weighing scales, oven, ph meter and spectrophotometer. he analyses were guided by the standards produced from International Commission for Uniform Methods of Sugar Analysis (ICUMSA). It has been observed that LSC must improve the sampling method by incorporating the use of mechanical samplers concurrent with the present manual sampling done inside the factory. An additional analysis was recommended to ensure the cleanliness of equipment used inside the factory. Proper implementing of standard procedure must be observed properly inside the sugar factory. In considering the future expansion of LSC the sampling method and analysis will help them to guide in prospering in the sugar industry.
