Abstract
Distillery slops and coconut paring meal extract were used as substrates for fermentation by Lactobacillus plantarum BS. The best conditions for microbial growth were determined by varying the amount of fresh distillery slops(0, 0.4, 1.2, 2, and 2.8% w/v) at constant coconut paring meal concentration of 1.125%w/v. The highest microbial growth (1.2x10⁹ cfu/ml) was observed using 1.2% w/v distillery slops. The concentration of coconut paring meal extract was varied (0, 0.375, 1.125, 1.875, and 2.625% w/v) at 1.2% w/v distillery slops. The highest microbial growth (1.5x10⁹ cfu/ml) was observed using 0.375% w/v coconut paring meal extract. The best concentration of substrates were then used for 24-h fermentation in a 3-L bioreactor to analyze the growth stoichiometry of L. plantarum BS by measuring the biomass concentration at 2-hour intervals. the growth curve generated from these measurements showed that L. plantarum BS reached its maximum growth after 10 hours. From the grown curve also, the maximum specific growth rate (Mmax) was 0.249 h⁻¹ and the doubling time (td) was h, which are comparable with a previous study done by Lovitt (n.d.) using standard and optimum medium having a Mmax of 0.30h⁻¹ and td of 2.30h.
