Abstract

The study dealt with two aspects in the agriculture sector, education and extension systems. Through a practicum at the University of Tsukuba under the Short Stay International program for Agricultural Education for Sustainable Development (Ag-ESD) from September to November 2012, the author experienced how education and extension system support each other to attain sustainable development. She was able to gain knowledge and experience regarding the different aspects of agricultural production through the lecture and field classes, in a Japanese setting. These lessons can be further used to develop existing knowledge systems in the country for a more sustainable agriculture development. The relevance of working together with neighboring Asian countries and agricultural universities is highlighted to better achieve sustainable development. One must note that Ag-ESD is just one aspect of the United Nations? aim of promoting sustainable development in a span of 10 years since 2005 until 2014 and that the University of Tsukuba had been a partner in carrying out the activity since 2008 through a Memorandum of Understanding with Asian countries and universities.
