Abstract

The raw sugar and refinery practice was conducted in Victorias Milling Company Inc., Victorias City, Negros Occidental from April 16, 2012 to May 19, 2012 for a total of 288 hours. Specifically, the field practice enabled the students to have deeper understanding on the actual operations involved in raw and refined sugar processing. The students also gained hands-on experience on the selected process equipments. They were able to relate and apply the learned principles and theories of chemical engineering from the textbooks to sugar processing. The practice gave opportunity to students to enhance their practical skills in preparation for future employment. Along with the practice was a design problem about the assessment of liquid wastes management system of the company which includes wastewater minimization, treatment, analysis and disposal. The study evaluated the current liquid wastes abatement scheme of the company and determined whether it complies with the standards of the DENR and with the Philippine Clean Water Act of 1994. Thus the study would create an impact on the image of the company and would determine the awareness and commitment of the company to protect the environment.
