Abstract

During pipelaying , it cannot be avoided to encounter obstruction such as depressions due to the presence of rivers or canals. Traditionally, pipelines were attached to existing bridges to cross these obstructions. However, DPWH prohibited this system of pipe crossing due to the possible damage that it m,ay bring to both the bridge and the pipeline. Because of this, other pipe crossing methods are considered in this study and evaluated based on parameters such as structural safety, ease of installation , time length of construction, project cost and environmental impact. The 32m pipe bridge at San Lorenzo, Taytay, Rizal is considered in the study and the pipe crossing methods assessed includes the independent pipe bridge, Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) method and open cut trench method. This study compares the given pipe crossing methods and recommends the most suitable method to use depending on the conditions of the site. Based from the results obtained int his study, HDD is generally the most efficient alternative method to use compared to the other methods based on cost, time length of construction, environmental impact and ease of installation. However, due to the condition of the site bering prone to seismic activities, independent pipe bridge is recommended to be used though HDD can still be utilized if proper planning and designing will be done to ensure the safety of the pipeline.
