Abstract
The study focuses mainly on the design, fabrication and calibration of the symmetrical proportional weir plate and portable weir. The proportional weir is a sharp-crested weir that provides a linearly proportional head-discharge. It consists of a rectangular crest which extends to a curved section. Gravimetric method was used to measure the discharge rate a particular head in the calibration process of both weirs. A linearly proportional rating curve was generated. Accordingly, the established discharge coefficient (Cd) that accounts for all the conditions and errors incurred for the weir plate and portable weir were about 0.4926 and 0.5550, respectively. The standard deviation and coefficient of variation relative to the established discharge coefficient was about 0.0313 and 6.3446% for the weir plate and 0.0166 and 2.9958% for the portable weir. Low values of these parameters show that the level of dispersion of gathered data was minimal thus, data set was precise and reliable. Henceforth, the derived formula for the weir plate and portable weir were Q=0.0463 (h₁-0.00667) and Q=0.0521 (h₁-00667 and Q=0.0521(h𔔊.00667, respectively. Using these formulas, the range of discharge that can be measured by the weir plate and the portable weir were about 1.0803 lps to 11.2663 lps, and 1.2157 lps to 12.6777 lps, respectively.
