Abstract

A feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the feeding value of okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L. Moench) pod meal as a feed ingredient for pre-starter - starter pigs. A total of 12 weanling pigs (Landrace x Large White) with an average body weight of 8 kg were distributed randomly to 12 individual pens which were randomly assigned to two treatments following a completely randomized design. The two dietary treatments were pre-starter/starter diet as control, and pre-starter/starter diet with 5% okra pod meal. Each treatment was replicated six (6) times. At 86.83% dry matter, okra pod meal used in this study contained 23.01% crude protein. Results of the feeding trial showed that okra pod meal had no detrimental effect on the growth performance of pre-starter to starter pigs. However, when okra pod meal was included in the pre-starter to starter diets, there was an increase in the feed cost of about Php 34.22 to produce a kilogram gain in body weight and therefore, not practical to use okra pod meal in young pig diets.
