Abstract
This study aimed to optimize the performance of the AMDP pneumatic dryer in drying coconut mat residue. The Box and Behnken experimental design was used to determine the effects of heater temperature, blower speed and feed screw speed to the drying capacity and energy consumption of the dryer and the final moisture content of thy coconut meat residue. Response surface regression was used in analyzing responses at 90% and 95% confidence levels. Results showed that the heater temperature was the sole significant factor affecting the response variables. Prediction equations revealed that the pneumatic dryer is at optimum performance if it is operated at 75°C heater temperature, 4200 rpm blower speed and 100 rpm feed screw speed. At this condition, the dryer consumes 1.36 kWh of energy, has a drying capacity of 4.68 kg H2O/h and can reduce the moisture content of the coconut meat residue to 25.5% MCwb.
