Abstract

A Vertical Diesel-Fueled Burner was designed and fabricated to evaluate the burning rate, the specific fuel consumption and the thermal efficiency as an alternative design that can provide constant heating to the hot water tank. The fabricated burner had the following components: kerosene nozzle; coiled¼" soft-drawn copper tubing; and adjustment knob. Swing check valve and ball were accessories added to the fuel line. Based on the results, the level of variation of air pressure significantly affects burning rate and specific fuel consumption of fabricated burner. In terms of thermal efficiency, variation of air pressure revealed no significant difference. The heating rate and thermal; efficiency of the fabricated diesel burner was relatively lower compared to the heating rate and thermal efficiency of existing LPG burner used for heat treatment of mangoes. The average computed thermal efficiency of the diesel burner was 40.50%. The fabricated burner can preheat the 1.6m³ of water from ambient temperature up to 55°C for 6 hours of operation. Fabricated diesel burner was able to reduce the cost of operation in terms of fuel consumption (1.37kg/hr) and total fuel cost per operation (Php375.86). In terms of cost of fabrication (Php27,006.75) and total cost per kilogram of water heated per change in temperature (Php0.012/kg water-°C) the diesel burner and LPG burner were comparable.
