Abstract

The study investigated the effectiveness of top-down methodology used in the construction of Discovery Promea, a 68-storey building located at Ayala Avenue, Makati City. The top down method, which replaced the intial open-cut method plan of the ownwe, was used because the open-cut method endangers the Makati Tuscany foundation from soil failure. The top-down method was observed from Basement 2 down to Basemnt 6. The effectiveness was measured in terms of soil protection, cost, and construction time. In terms of unit cost, top-down method is more expensive. In terms of curing, top-down method is longer since paneling is done in the Diagphragm wall (a wallused to protect large amount od soil pressure). Safety is considered as the primary advantage of top-down method. The dominating disadvantages of top-down method are high construction cost and long duration of construction. The method is found to be effective in protecting adjacent foundation of the building, as in the case of Makati Tuscany, its adjacent building. Therefore, in constructing deep basements nearby building, the top-down methodology can be considered as an option.
