Abstract

In this field practice, the performance of Lateral E of the Mabacan River Irrigation System (MRIS) was evaluated in terms of its conveyance efficiency, operation and maintenance. Flow measurements were done at the entrance and end of Lateral E. Data from the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) and previous studies on the MRIS were also used for comparison purposes. The operation practices of NIA and farmers were also observed. The conveyance efficiency of Lateral E was found to be 16.94% with the discharge of 189.49 lps at the entrance being reduced to 32.1 lps at the exit at the time of flow measurement. This low conveyance efficiency is mainly due to numerous diversions along the lateral. Hence, the irrigation water supplied by LAteral E does not reach the dowmnstream parts of the service area. Additionally, it was found that the condition of the lateral is very poor and this contributes to its low conveyance efficiency. The operation practices done are not effective in conveying the water to the service area. The lateral is poorly maintained and needs to be rehabilitated. The operation and maintenance of Lateral E have to be improved in order to increase its conveyance efficiency and enhance its irrigation performance.
