Abstract
A parametric study on the batch pretreatment of banana peelings, Musa sapientum, using dilute sulfuric acid, prior to ethanol production by Saccharomyces cerevisiae, was carried out on a laboratory scale. Samples were collected dried, milled and screened before characterization. Banana peelings were found to have the following composition: 25.1883% alpha cellulose and 15.7568% hemicellulose. Chemical pretreatment was done using 1%, 3%, and 5% v/v sulfuric acid at 50, 75, and 100ºC for 15, 30 and 45 minutes. The filtrate was analyzed for total sugar content before discarding and the pretreated biomass was used in the simultaneous saccharification and fermentation process at its best conditions. possible sugar loss on the filtrate was determined using phenol-sulfuric method. Severity of the pretreatment condition was directly related to sugar loss. The highest sugar loss was obtained at 5% acid concentration 100ºC for30 minutes which was 26.533mg/mL.The best pretreatment conditions for the banana peelings were obtained using Response Surface Methodology. Quadratic model was chosen in order to predict the effects of the three parameters on the response. Using numerical approach, the desirable pretreatment combination that produced the maximum total sugar was:1.96% sulfuric acid concentration, 69.35ºC reaction temperature for 22.99 minutes reaction time. Using the best pretreatment conditions for banana peelings ethanol yield after six days of fermentation at room temperature was 3.2g/L solution or 0.40% v/v with 60.6% cellulose conversion. Banana peelings as feedstock were capable of producing ethanol using SSF.
