Abstract
This study investigated the suitability of volcanic pumice as a coarse aggregate substitute. Specifically, this study investigated the susceptibility of lightweight concrete with volcanic pumice as aggregate to the penetration of water with varying water to cement ratio and curing period through the sorptivity test. Sorptivity test is a standard test used to determine the rate of absorption of water through an unsaturated sample. Initial sorptivity is used in evaluating the durability of concrete structures not in permanent contact with water like structures in tidal zones while secondary sorptivity is used in evaluating the durability concrete structures in constant contact with water like dams. The result indicated that lower water to cement ratio increases Type IP Lightweight Concrete's durability to resist water absorption by capillary action in terms of initial and secondary sorptivity. Also, increasing the curing period also contributes in improving the durability of Type IP Lightweight Concrete in increasing water absorption.
