Abstract
A swinging basket laboratory centrifuge with an 11-L capacity was fabricated to aid the oil-gum separation after the water degumming of Jatropha curcas L. oil. separation after the water degumming of Jatropha curcas L. oil. Its performance was evaluated based on the effect of its operating speed (tested at 350 and 600rpm) and operating time (tested for 5 and 10 minutes) on the recent removal of gums after water degumming and centrifugation. The gum content of the oil was related to the concentration of phosphorus in the oil. A protocol on the use of the fabricated centrifuge at different operating speeds and loads was also made. The oil subjected to 350rpmn centrifugatioon did not yield satisfactory results since the speed was too low to aid the separation. Instead the oil was simply the percent removal of gums. In the 10 minute centrifugation, the percent removal of gums was 35.02% and 15.66% in the 5 minute centrifugation. The effect of the operating time of the centrifugation was inconclusive. An additional performance evaluation based on the power requirement of the centrifuge was done. At high operating speeds the capacity of the centrifuge was limited to light loads only since the motor can supply a power of 3hp.
