Abstract
This study investigated the effect of cold joints on the corrosion rate of reinforcing bars. Four cases were considered. The first case served as control. The second case was composed of concrete specimens with cold joints. The third case was composed of concrete specimens with cold joints wherein concrete grout was applied on the joint before the subsequent concrete pour. The fourth case was composed of concrete specimens with cold joints wherein laitance of the hardened concrete was removed before the subsequent pour of concrete. The third and fourth cases were used to explore possible methods to treat the effect of cold joints. All concrete specimens were composed of concrete with a water-to-cement ratio of 0.55, composed of same lengths and orientation of embedded steel bar, cured for 28 days and subjected to Accelerated Short-Term Technique. Using Weigh Loss Analysis, it was found out that cold joints increase the corrosion rate of the embedded steel bars. It was also found out that the application of concrete grout and removal of laitance of hardened concrete were both effective ways to treat the effect of cold joints. The claim of this study were supported by various statistical analyses performed.
