Abstract

The major practice was conducted at the Pilipinas Kaneko Seeds Corporation‟s Experimental Farm in Barangay Tibig, Lipa City, Batangas from April 02 to June 02, 2011. The student took part in various farm and postharvest activities in relation to seed production of open-pollinated corn varieties such as the „Supersweet‟ corn and „Honey White‟ corn. These included land preparation, planting, fertilization, irrigation, insect and disease management, harvesting, sorting, ear drying, shelling, seed drying, seed cleaning, seed treatment, packaging and storage. Additional cultural management practices for seed production were rouging, isolation and period of harvesting. „Supersweet‟ corn yields 1,000 kg of seeds per hectare while „Honey White‟ corn has a higher yield at 2,800 kg of seeds per hectare. Problems encountered were lack of equipment for seed drying, upgrading and sorting, rodent infestation, lack of protective gear of the workers during pesticide application, absence of plastic curtains in cold the storage facility and limited number of dehumidifiers. Some recommendations to improve seed processing operations include the use of batch or bin dryers, use of corn sheller, air screen machine and color separator during seed ugrading.
