Abstract
Microalgae Nitzschia palea was cultured in photobioreactors and its oil was solvent-extracted for lipid composition analysis. The effect of biomass to volume solvent, which is hexane, ratio and soaking time were studied., The ratios used were 1:4 biomass to volume hexane, 1:5 biomass to volume hexane, and 1:6 biomass to volume hexane. The soaking times used were 12 hours, 24 hours, and 36 hours soaking time. Results were noted that as the biomass to volume solvent ratio was increased, the amount of oil extracted also increased. A maximum yield of 3.03% was obtained from the 1:6 ratio. It was also noted that as the soaking time was increased, the amount of oil extracted consequently increased. The 36-hour soaking time yielded a 2.72% oil extract.Lipid analysis was performed using thin layer chromatography. The lipid composition from the microalgal culture of Nitzschia palea was 90.52% TAG,7.00% Sterol, 2.12% 1,3-DAG and 0.36% 1,2-DAG.
