Abstract
The technical feasibility of nickel removal from nickel-containing electroplating wastewater by electrochemical deposition was investigated. Comparative performance was also done using simulated wastewater to determine possible interference of other components on nickel electrodeposition. The treatment was carried out using three operating currents (3A, 4A, and 5A). The nickel, zinc and manganese content, temperature, and pH of the wastewater were observed during the experiments. Results showed that for actual electroplating wastewater, an increase in operating current of the process(shown by statistical analysis) did not increase nickel removal increased as the operating current increased. The maximum nickel removal efficiencies for actual and simulated wastewater (at the operating currents studied) were 42.35% and 99.90%, respectively. This indicated the presence of other compounds cathode, as confirmed by x-ray flourescence measurements, with maximum removal efficiencies of 56.04% and 30.04%, respectively. Considering the nickel removal, quality of cathode deposits, and final nickel concentration, pH, and temperature of the wastewater, the removal of nickel in elecrtroplating wastewater by electrochemical deposition may not be as cost-effective when compared to other treatment methods such as flocculation and alkali precipitation. However, sludge production should be expected upon employment of these chemical treatment methods which could be managed by Solidification/ Stabilization methods.
