Abstract

Cainta is an urban municipality in Rizal that has the highest rate of traffic accidents based on 2014 accident records. To determine accident prone areas or black spots in the municipality, black spot cluster analysis of traffic accidents using Geographic Information System (GIS) application was conducted. Traffic accident records from 2011-2014 were collected from the PNPCainta Traffic Management Office. The coordinates of the accident locations were determined using Google Maps and geotagging. To account for accident severity, severity factors were estimated using the socio-economic cost of road accidents in Metro Manila.Density maps were generated based on accident frequency and accident severity during daytime, night time, and combined daytime and night time accidents. Kernel Density Estimation was used in analyzing the density of the accidents. The identified black spots were found along Ortigas Avenue Extension, namely: Valley Golf Intersection, Brookside Intersection Junction Intersection, Vista Verde Intersection, Village East Intersection, Karangalan Village Gate 1 and Green Park Intersection. For improved black spot studies, comprehensive accident reports are needed for precise location of traffic accidents and accident analysis.
