Abstract

A gas-gas liquid dispersion experiment on aqueous sucrose solution was conducted for preliminary analysis on the effect of physicochemical properties and process parameters on volumetric oxygen mass transfer coefficient using a batch stirred reactor. Three (#) parameters were investigated in the parametric study which include sucrose concentration, sparger hole diameter, and sparging rate. The dissolved oxygen concentration was determined using an electronic DO meter. Statistical analysis using Analysis of variance showed that sucrose concentration and sparging rate were the significant parameters. The highest oxygen mass transfer coefficient (0.0162s-1) was obtained at low sucrose concentration operated at sparging rate of 1L/min using a 1 mm hole size orifice sparger. The highest aeration efficiency of 75.91% was determined using the same treatment. Further investigations on the effect of temperature and agitation rate and the presence of microorganisms were recommended.
