Abstract

Laguna is surrounded by numerous active faults such as the Valley Fault System (VFS) on the West, Philippine Fault Zone (PFZ) Infanta Fault on the East, and Lubang Fault on the South, found in the sea between Batangas and Mindoro peninsula. Among the faults near Laguna, of major concern is the West Valley Fault WVF) which can potentially cause a Magnitude 7.2 earthquake based on the 2004 earthquake Impact Reduction Study for Metropolitan Manila by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), and the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS). This earthquake is considered here as the maximum considered earthquake (MCE). To mitigate the damage that would result from the occurrence of MCE, seismic risk assessment is performed for buildings in UPLB. This study utilized a semi-quantitative risk assessment approach that incorporates hazard, vulnerability, and exposure parameters and used a scoring scheme based from NSCP and FEMA guidelines. From the 201 study od Abadilla, Ignacio and Valino they listed 51 academic buildings in the campus that were deemed seismically vulnerable in a structural perspective. In addition,16 more administrative and service buildings were considered that was reckoned to be important. With this procedure, out of the 67 buildings assessed 31 of which posed a medium level f risk. Twenty-two(@@) of those 31 were academic buildings, and the remaining nine(9) came from the service buildings. Information from this study would help in the prioritization of buildings that would undergo detailed seismic evaluation for retrofit and improvement.
