Abstract

Protection coordination is a critical aspect in a power system. In an electric cooperative like LEYECO IV, continous upgrading of the distribution system has been made to accommodate the increasing energy demand. Protection coordination should be done to ensure safety and minimize interruptions.Using the check the check coordination analysis function of Synergi® Electric 5 the Hilongos substation distribution system was evaluated and it revealed that atotal of 152 protective pairs in the system are not coordinated. There are 87 violations on the transformer-fuse pairs,48 violations on the fuse-fuse pairs, and 17 violations on the fuse-line pairs. The time-current characteristic curves(TCC) of the protective devices were compared to implement coordination. Coordination was done on the transformer-fus pairs first. The fuse-fuse and the fuse-line pairs were coordinated by adjusting the TCC of the fuse just enough to sense the minimum fault current in fuses'location and to eliminate intersections on the fuse-fuse pairs TCC.The ratings of the protective devices were adjusted according to the National Electric Code standard. Another run of coordination analysis revealed that coordination problems were all settled. The distribution system of the Hilongos substation was perfectly coordinated after all violations were resolved. .
