Abstract
The general objective of the study was to determine the factors affecting the tenancy arrangements of rice tenants in selected areas in Bataan. Specifically the study aimed: (1) to describe the socio-economic characteristics of share and leasehold tenancies to the tenants (2) to analyze and determine the factors affecting tenancy arrangements such as the tenant?s age, educational attainment and assets (3) to describe problems and issues affecting tenancy arrangements and recommend solutions to address these problems and (4) to improve the policy on tenancy arrangements in the Philippines. Stratified random sampling was used in selecting 60 tenant-respondents. Thirty respondents for share tenants and thirty respondents for leasehold tenants were interviewed. Primary and secondary data were used in the study. Descriptive analysis was used to describe political, socio-cultural, economic and social capital factors of share and leasehold tenants. Frequency tables were used to describe the problems encountered by the tenants. Logit analysis was employed to determine the factors that significantly affect tenancy arrangements of rice tenants. The logit analysis revealed that tenant?s age and assets were positive and significant in influencing tenancy arrangements. Older tenants preferred leasehold tenancy and leasehold tenants tend to have greater assets than share tenants. Years in farming and farm size were negative and significant. Share tenants spent more years in farming than their leasehold counterparts and share tenants had a greater farm size compared to leasehold tenants. Based on the factors that significantly affected tenancy arrangement of rice tenants in Bataan this study suggests that (1) share tenancy be considered as an option and should not be made illegal, (2) programs that would aid the landlords to participate in leasehold tenancy arrangements should be intensified and (3) more incentives should be provided to tenants to continue leasehold tenancy arrangement.
