Abstract

The study was primarily conducted to find out the determinants of investment behavior of coffee growers in Amadeo, Cavite. The specific objectives were to: a) describe the socio-economic profile of the coffee growers; b) determine the forms of investment of the coffee growers; c) determine the factors that influence the investment behavior of the coffee growers and; d) provide some policy directions for the coffee industry in Amadeo, in particular, and in the country, in general. The respondents’ investment in coffee growing included the quantity and variety of coffee planted in their farms and the farm assets they currently own. Through the use of the multiple regression analysis, it was revealed that the determinants of investment behavior of the coffee growers were income, farm size, and tenure status. In this particular study, it appeared that as the income increases, the level of investment in coffee growing decreases, which was found out to be inconsistent with the hypothesis. From the respondents’ attributes, it was observed that they have a greater average income from non-coffee crops and non- farm operations than from coffee production itself. The implication of this is that some coffee growers may be focusing more on their other sources of income instead of their coffee growing business. As for the farm size, it was found out that as a farm increases in size, the level of investment also increases. Lastly, it also appeared that owner-cultivators invest more in coffee growing than those who are engaged in share hold tenancy arrangements. Therefore, it was recommended that the government must create ways to encourage farmers to sustain the investment in agricultural production, specifically in coffee farming. They must provide funds, in the form of investment equipments and facilities, to aid in the production, as well as in the harvesting and processing operations. Also, it was recommended that the implementation of CARP (Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program) must be enhanced in order to make way for more farmers with ownership of a land. An improvement in the procedures of land distribution is also recommended so as to allow for larger sizes of land to be given to the farmers.
