Abstract
The Streetlight Protection Against Illegal Service Connections (SPAI) is an equipment used by MERALCO Plaridel Sector to minimize system loss and protect distribution transformers. This was assembled by the company’s engineers to prevent electricity theft, since theft is still accomplished amidst the presence of Elevated Metering Centers (EMCs). These EMCs are clustered meters elevated in a height beyond normal reachable height The SPAI is composed of electrical equipment like contactors, relays and breakers. It de-energizes the streetlights during the day and when there is a presence of an illegal service connection. It has an automatic reset once the illegal service connection is removed. Data gathering and analysis of data are important steps in assessing the installation of SPAI.
