Abstract

The study was conducted to analyze the profitability of the swine production under the paiwi system of the Bago (Ibaan) Multi-Purpose Cooperative. Specifically, the study intended to: a) describe the socio-economic profile of the swine raisers under the program, b) estimate the costs and returns associated with the swine raisers’ production under the program, c) determine the level of satisfaction of the swine raiser-respondents on the cooperative’s paiwi system, and d) identify the problems encountered by the member-raisers and recommend viable solutions to the problems. The study used stratified random sampling in selecting the respondents. Thirty- five were hog-fattener raisers and fifteen were hog-breeder raisers. The study used the descriptive method and cost and returns analysis to analyze the data collected from the swine member-raisers and the cooperative. In addition, the Likert Scale was used to determine the level of satisfaction of the raisers on the cooperative’s paiwi system. The results showed that the hog fattening operation under the paiwi program of the cooperative was profitable only on a per farm basis as shown by the values of the net farm income, net cash income and gross margin. However, the hog breeding operation under the program was not profitable. Furthermore, comparing the net farm income of the two types of operations, it was revealed that net farm income of the hog-fattener respondents was higher compared with that of the hog-breeder respondents. It was also found out that swine raisers were generally satisfied with the program’s application procedure, monitoring assistance, penalty imposition, profit and costs sharing, weighing of animals, and marketing assistance. The problems encountered by the swine member-raisers were as follows: (1) occurrence and spread of diseases among animals (2) death losses in the farm, (3) high cost of feeds, (4) disposing of swine manure, (5) delayed procurement and marketing of the animals, and (6) unstable prices of hogs in the market. The following recommendations are for the benefits of the swine-raisers under the program: a) the hog-breeder respondents should avail of the hog-fattening program instead; b) respondents are encouraged to dispose the swine manure by selling them; c) the cooperative may offer price discounts on feeds; d) the cooperative should give additional incentives to raisers with good production performance; e) the cooperative should look at the causes of loss as well as the problems faced by the raisers; f) the cooperative should conduct more regular seminars and trainings; g) swine-raiser respondents are suggested to keep a copy of their own production expenses; and h) lastly, member-raisers are encouraged to adopt cost-reducing technologies in the farm.
