Abstract

Two present problems of engineers are being addressed in this study .First is an effective way of disposing treated sludge (biosolids) which is a byproduct of wastewater treatment plants and, another, is the reduction of cement production since cement produces greenhouse gases that worsen the global warming and cement also is a large consumer of natural resources. In this study, a byproduct of wastewater treatment plants will be used as a raw material in making concrete. Biosolids is used as replacement for cement with varying percentage from )0% to 5%,10% and 15%. The slump of the freshly mixed concrete was measured to determine the workability of the concrete mix with water-cement ratio of 0.5. The compressive strength of concrete with )%, 5%, 10% and 15% biosolids as cement replacement is 26.28MPa, 23.21MPa,19.24MPa and 17.29MPa, respectively.. The compressive strength of concrete decreased when the percentage of sludge added increased. The same trend happens to the workability of the concrete mix, increase in the amount f biosolids results to the decrease of workability
