Abstract

The University of the Philippines Los Baños maintains lagging power factor of 0.95 on average. For at least the past two years, no form of power factor correction was in effects as there seemed to be no need for one. However, research suggests that further correction might still yield some benefits. To certain, due evaluation of all known forms of correction must be done. Before such evaluations can proceed, however, substantial data regarding the ratings of loads, facilities, and the University in its entirety, must first be obtained. Unfortunately, due to the lack of the necessary facilities and resources, not all forms of correction could be properly assessed and extensive work would be initially required in the gathering of raw data. This manuscript is a two-part study that sought first to profile the power and power factor ratings of the University as a whole, its facilities, and its typical loads. and then proceeded to process the gathered data to fiscally evaluate further correction. It has conclusively shown that for three power factor correction methods-variable capacitor banks at main service entrance, synchronous condensers at main service entrance, and variable capacitors at building power entrances-no further benefit was to be expected as the costs of implementation would greatly outweigh the returns.
