Abstract

A study was conducted to characterize and assess the production constraints of potentially saline lowland soils in Barangay Navotas, Balayan, Batangas from June 2014 to May 2015. Eight rice fields of varying distance from the coast and swamp were selected and characterized for soil physical and chemical properties. Soil pH ranged from neutral to moderately alkaline due to high percentage of basic cations. Organic matter content ranged from low to medium while total nitrogen was very low to low during WS 2014 and increased to medium to very high after DS 2014. Available P ranged from low to very high during the three sampling periods. Exchangeable basic cations (Ca>Mg>Na>K) remained high after WS and DS 2014. Results of the study indicated that high sodium content was the major soil constraint in the area. Additional constraints include clay texture (field 5), high EC (fields 2, 4, 5, 6), low OM content (fields 2, 6 and 8) low N content (start of WS 2014), low P content (fields 1, 2, 5, 7, 8) low base saturation (fields 4) and high ESP (fields 1, 4, 5, 6). Rice production in the area was affected by high salinity, low N fertilizer application, low P uptake, and high Na uptake. Use of salt tolerant varieties like NSIC Rc326 (Salinas 11) and NSIC Rc216 (Tubigan 17), high N, P and K applications are recommended to increase rice production in the area.
