Abstract

This paper describes the evaluation of an evacuated tube solar water heater for the hot water treatment of mango. This paper aims to assess the performance of an evacuated tube in comparison to conventional methods of heating water with respect to energy and mass balance, economics of treatment and efficiency in heating water. This paper also aims to propose a large scale design of a solar powered hot water treatment facility for mango. An evacuated tube solar water heater and electricity and LPG powered water heaters were tested in a lab scale design which can hold up to 225 L of water and mango. Solar radiation data were collected to compute for the efficiency of the solar collector in absorbing energy from the sun. The efficiency was found out to be 54.7%. The savings per preheating process were calculated for the solar water heater and for the conventional water heaters. The solar water heater reduced the cost of treatment by reducing the use of conventional heaters. The return of the initial investment on the solar water heaters for the lab scale design were calculated using the discounted payback period and it was found out that the investment cah be recovered in 9-10 years. A large scale design was also proposed with 5 solar water heaters to preheat 1892L of water for the treatment of 440kg of mango. The design reduced the return of investment to 5 years and saved 37 minutes of the preheating process.
