Abstract

A micro-controller based pH measuring instrument was developed to determine the pH variation of soil at various soil depths before and after fertilizer application. The instrument uses an Arduino micro-controller board, SD Card shield for data storage and pH sensor kit for pH measurement. pH values soil samples one and two days after fertilizer application. The pH values of the soil samples one and two days after fertilizer application were also measured and compared. Statistical analysis were performed to determine if the difference between the pH values at various depths, locations, before and after fertilizer applications are significant. The study showed that there is a significant difference (probability=0.0001) between the pH measurements at various locations, various depths and before and after fertilizer application. A comparison of the fabricated instrument's pH measurement with pH papers commonly used in the field by farmers and agricultural scientists were also conducted. The study showed that the fabricated instrument's reading (5.40-7.30) are similar to the pH paper values (6.0-7.0) but provided better level of precision.
