Abstract

UPLB SAMASINING, the cultural arm of the Department of Humanities (DHUM) at the University of the Philippines Los Banos, is a university group that aims to provide an alternative venue for education for both students and faculty members. In its 40 years of existence, it has provided the university with a wide array of productions and activities. However, the Department of Humanities has no wide-ranging records of these 40 years. As a SAMASINING student coordinator, the researcher decided to conduct this research to help the company locate and preserve information about its history for future reference of the UPLB Faculty and Student body, especially of students under the BA Communication Arts program. With this historico-descriptive study, the researcher located and chronicled information on the establishment and development of SAMASINING, examined the role of SAMASINING’s repertoire in its development and analyzed its present condition in terms of its production processes. This study also provides a preliminary evaluation of SAMASINING’s relation to the BA Communication Arts curriculum and of its current production processes. The researcher conducted interviews with its founders, previous DHUM chairpersons, former and present members of its advisory board, directors, collaborators, and student volunteers who were involved in SAMASINING productions. The researcher also scouted for articles written about SAMASINING and for production materials which were used as references for this study. This study provided a short narrative of the history of SAMASINING, showed the underlying issues and concerns relating to SAMASINING as the laboratory for the BACA curriculum and how it was not able to completely fulfil its role as such, evaluated its productions, activities, and production management processes.
