Abstract

The water resources potential of the Cagayan De Oro River Basin was assessed in order to estimate the water availability using supply and demand balance for years 2020 and 2050. The river basin was characterized based on its geographical location, topography, rainfall pattern, land use, land classification, streamflow and groundwater storage. The current and projected surface water supply was determined based on the 80% dependable flow of the Cagayan River. The projected groundwater supply is the same as groundwater recharge and was determined based on rainfall projections using MarkSim® under four RCP emission scenarios. Water demand considered were domestic, agricultural and industrial uses. Domestic water demand was computed from the per capita water consumption and projected population. Only the irrigation water demand was considered in agricultural demand. An average irrigation development of 1.125% per year was used to project the irrigation water demand. Industrial water demand was projected to increase by 20% and 70% of the current industrial demand for 2020 and 2050, respectively. Water balance analysis showed that the Cagayan De Oro Rover Basin has abundant water resources that can support the water demand from domestic, agricultural and industrial uses for 2020 and 2050 under all RCP scenarios.
