Abstract

The study was done to determine the seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii antibodies in household domestic cats within Brgy. Batong Malake, Los Baños, Laguna. A total of 42 intact cats of both sexes and various ages were considered in this study. Consent forms were secured prior to the sample collection and all of the animals were apparently healthy during the study. Blood samples were collected from the cats via jugular venipuncture and fecal samples were collected using sterile swabs. The serum from the collected blood samples were tested for T. gondii antibodies using the commercially available ELISA antibody test kit and interpreted using a digital image scanner software. Fecal samples were subjected to a modified flotation technique to demonstrate oocyst. The seroprevalence observed was 62% (26/42) consisting of 14 (54%) females and 12 males (46%). Furthermore, 22/26 (85%) were adult and 4/26 (15%) were juveniles. None of the cats demonstrated oocyst in their feces. A minimal erythrocytopenia and thrombocytopenia was observed among seropositive cats.
