Abstract
Ten apparently healthy, adult (≥ six months months), intact, female Domestic Shorthaired cats were used and individually caged. Physical and hematologic examination was done and the animals were aseptically prepared for routine ovariohysterectomy. Another full thickness skin incision was made cranially. Povidone iodine and polyhexanide-betaine was applied on the cranial and caudal wounds respectively twice a week for 21 days. The macroscopic and microscopic parameters were observed weekly post operation. Qualitative bacteriology was done on days zero and seven post operation. Polyhexanide-betaine has shown distinct inflammation and has caused early granulation. Microscopically, polyhexanide-betaine has shown nearly complete wound healing. Quantitative bacteriology has shown no significant difference between the two treatments (p>0.05). Staphylococcus spp. was the predominant bacteria isolated on days seven and 21. Based from the results of the study, the use of polyhexanide-betaine and povdione-iodine on skin wound healing are comparable and effective.
