Abstract

Canine leptospirosis is one of the most endemic diseases of dogs that is usually misdiagnosed due to its wide variety of clinical manifestations. In this study, 30 blood samples from canine patients suspected of leptospirosis (based on clinical signs) at the University of the Philippines Veterinary Teaching Hospital (UP VTH) in Diliman, Quezon City were tested for Leptospira sp. using bacterial culture in Korthof medium and microscopic observation. Of the 30 blood samples, 4 samples (13%) showed ring formations and 2 other samples (7%) showed spirochete-like structures under microscopic observation which means that leptospires could be present in the sample. The major presenting signs of these patients were lethargy and anorexia, while leukocytosis and erythrocytopenia were the main hematological findings. This study was able to culture leptospires from blood of dogs and identify clinical signs of patients which showed bacterial growth in culture, as well as provide a preliminary study on methods of isolation and microscopy for leptospirosis in dogs.
